Third grade is a turning point: students shift from learning to read to
reading to learn. On the spring 2026 Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) tests:

In 3rd grade, 40.8% met or exceeded expectations in English language arts and 41.5% in math.
Don’t Wait – Seek Out Tutoring If:
- Your student is struggling with any academic subject
- Your student is yellow or red on DIBELS or other testing
- Your student is making growth but is still behind grade level
- Your student is going through the Response to Intervention (RTI) or Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process
- Your student shows falling confidence or negative self-talk
- Your student dislikes school or has lost interest in it
- There’s a family history of dyslexia or another learning disability
- You or your student are struggling with homeschool learning
If you’re wondering whether your student needs additional support, consider this:
K–6 lays the foundation for reading and number sense; every academic skill
builds from here for the rest of your student’s school years. Once gaps form, they’re harder to close.
But the brain is more adaptable in the younger years, so growth can happen while your student’s
self-confidence stays intact.
